Dietary 25(OH)D3 as a significant contributor to total vitamin D intake

A narrative review by Bruins (2025), suggests that encouraging fortification and other strategies may support closing the gap between current and recommended vitamin D intakes. The most frequently fortified products included margarines and plant-based alternative foods and drinks; 44 % of margarine & other blends. For instance, in the UK, the levels of vitamin D fortification per 100 g, analysed from supermarket data, were highest in margarines and fat spreads.
The findings emphasize that up to 100 % of Europeans fail to meet 10 µg/d of vitamin D, suggesting that fortification and other strategies are needed to close the intake gap. In summary, margarine and plant-based drinks can provide most of the daily vitamin D. 🌱
